Why We’re Fasting

For two years, the Israeli military has bombed and starved over two million people in Gaza. On October 10, a ceasefire was announced. But Israeli military has killed over 200 Palestinians in the first 20 days of “ceasefire,” and continues to block food and supplies from entering Gaza. As Hoosiers, we refuse to go on with business as usual while people are being deliberately starved.

Fasting allows us to connect to people in Gaza, even if we experience only a fraction of what they endure.

It’s a time of reflection that allows our bodies to process our anger and grief.

Collective fasting connects us to one another and reminds us we are stronger together as we raise awareness and mobilize our communities.

This fast is a public act of resistance. It’s also a demand to the Indiana Treasury: Divest from genocide. Invest in Indiana.

What’s Indiana Got to Do with This?

For two years, we’ve watched the genocide in Palestine and asked, “What can we do here in Indiana to make a material difference?”

One answer: Follow the Money.

Indiana allows the state treasurer to invest in Israel Bonds, providing direct financial support to a government currently engaged in mass starvation and violence in Gaza. While other international investments must meet strict financial standards, Israel gets special treatment, no matter its actions. It’s time to end this double standard!

It’s time to stop arming Israel and start investing in Indiana businesses and residents.

Join the Fast

For 93 days from August 3 to November 3, 80 people across Indiana took 24-hour shifts of a continuous fast in solidarity with the people of Gaza.

Now, we are holding collective fasts, where groups choose the same fast day and engage in collective action around their fast. Each week we will learn how Israel’s blockade has impacted a different aspect of life in Gaza since 2006, how US politicians and corporations are complicit, and how we can act to end the siege!

We invite you to bring more people into the work and sign up to fast together! Your group might choose to fast according to a specific week’s focus, or fast however is meaningful and accessible to you. Whether you skip meals, abstain from specific foods, or fast from a particular comfort or habit, all forms of fasting are welcome.

As a Faster, You Will:

  • Take part in a public fast (you choose the day).

  • Post a photo or video on social media sharing why you're fasting. Be sure to tag @JVPindiana.

  • Take collective action with your group—you might host a fundraiser, letter-writing meetup, or teach-in. See our Resources page for ideas!

  • Support our letter-writing campaign to Indiana Treasurer Daniel Elliott, urging Indiana to divest from Israel Bonds.

  • Contact Senator Todd Young and demand an end to the siege and the allowance of nutrient-rich aid into Gaza.

  • Encourage donations to grassroots efforts like the Middle East Children’s Alliance.

  • Share information in your community about the blockade of food and aid into Gaza and why this matters here in the U.S. and Indiana, by distributing flyers at local farmers markets, food festivals, and public events

  • Jewish fasters: Engage your community. Can you organize a break-fast Shabbat or bring your congregation into the campaign?

Feel free to use the talking points, social media templates, organizing tips, and more on our Resources page.

Let’s Build Pressure. Let’s Build Power.

Fasting alone won’t feed Gaza.
But together, through collective action, relentless pressure, and public accountability, we can help end this crisis and bring justice closer.

Not Ready to Fast? You Can Still Help.

Fasting isn’t for everyone — and that’s okay!
You can still use our
toolkit to write letters, print flyers, and more! Submit a public event or join a scheduled event. Please let us know how you’re getting involved!
